La casa de subastas Sotheby’s ha vendido esta semana por más de un millón de dólares un histórico anillo de esmeralda colombiana, que encontraron en un barco español hundido frente a las costas de Florida en el siglo XVII.
La reliquia fue subastada en 1.197.000 dólares, 20 veces el valor de salida que estableció la casa de subastas, ubicado entre los 50 mil y 70 mil dólares.
De acuerdo con Sotheby’s, el exorbitante valor se debe a que la piedra preciosa pertenecía a Nuestra Señora de Atocha, un galeón español con un cargamento de oro, plata y piedras preciosas que, en 1622, naufragó trágicamente y se hundió frente a las costas de Florida en medio de un huracán.
En 1985, la lujosa pieza fue descubierta por Mel Fisher, un cazador de tesoros, que tras 16 años de búsqueda dio con los restos de la famosa embarcación.
Luego del hallazgo, Frank Perdue, uno de los magnates estadounidenses que patrocinó la expedición de Mel Fisher, entregó la gema a su esposa, la escritora estadounidense Mitzi Perdue, en el anillo de compromiso.
“Mi difunto esposo era la persona más filantrópica que he conocido”, dijo la propietaria al argumentar la decisión de subastar la histórica joya y destinar la cantidad recaudada como ayuda humanitaria para Ucrania.
